Global Curriculum Schools in Abu Dhabi
Being a city that welcomes people from all around the world, Abu Dhabi is home to schools that follow different curriculums such as Canadian, Philippine, German, French, Japanese, Iranian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, SABIS and International Baccalaureate.
Canadian Curriculum – The Canadian curriculum is designed to elicit development and quality of people’s cognition through the guiding of accommodations of individuals to their natural environment and their changing social order. Subjects that typically get assessed (i.e., language arts, mathematics, and science) assume greater importance than non-assessed subjects (i.e., music, visual arts, and physical education) or facets of the curriculum (i.e., reading and writing versus speaking and listening).
Philippine Curriculum – The Philippine curriculum follows the system of K-12 (kindergarten to Grade 12). The education system is similar to that of the American system, wherein junior high school runs from Grade 7 to Grade 8 and senior high school is for students pursuing 11th and 12th. In the senior high school, students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. Senior high school subjects fall under either the core curriculum or specific tracks.
German Curriculum – The German curriculum followed in schools in Abu Dhabi is as recommended by the standards for international German schools. There is a heavy emphasis on research and students being independent, which drives them to be self-sufficient all-rounders.
French Curriculum – The French curriculum is comprised of three stages. First is primary school (enseignement primaire) in which children between the ages of 6-11 are enrolled on the French curriculum to experience a primary education which is very similar to other leading global systems. Next comes the secondary school level, where the French curriculum splits into two stages: the college and the lycee. The college teaches pupils between 11-15 over the course of four years. Before moving on the the lycee, all college students will take their first official exams to achieve the “Diplome National du Brevet”. Last comes the lycee, which educates students during their final three years of secondary education. Pupils aged 15-18 study to undertake the crucial baccalaureat exam which they must pass in order to enter university.
SABIS Curriculum – This curriculum emphasizes on a well-balanced body of knowledge, skills, and experiences. In addition to the core subjects of English, mathematics, and world languages, the SABIS curriculum is designed to provide knowledge of a broad range of subjects including science, social studies, art, music, health, physical education, and computers. It is designed to develop a balanced, well-rounded, college-preparatory experience.
International Baccalaureate (IB) – The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an international educational foundation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and founded in 1968. It offers four educational programmes: the IB Diploma Programme and the IB Career-related Programme for students aged 16 to 19, the IB Middle Years Programme, designed for students aged 11 to 16, and the IB Primary Years Programme for children aged 3 to 12. To teach these programmes, schools need to be authorised by IB.
